Goal-Oriented Coaching for Students at All College Levels

For Parents

Many parents ask, "Just what is coaching, and how can it help my son or daughter?"

There are many different factors that can contribute to low grades and poor performance. These can range from academic difficulties, such as inadequate academic preparation or poor study skills, to social and psychological factors, such as feelings of inadequacy in the university environment, difficulty adjusting to the demands of the college curriculum, difficulty in effectively managing time, or poor organizational skills. In addition, the presence of a physical or learning disability can sometimes add further complications to the student's learning environment. Any of these issues can turn an otherwise successful student into one who struggles just to make minimum grades. Coaching can help transform a negative college experience into one that is both personally and academically fulfilling.

The coaching relationship is a unique one. A coach is neither a therapist nor a tutor. The coach's role is to help your son or daughter identify patterns and behaviors that are blocking him or her from realizing their highest potential. The coach will work with your son or daughter to provide a supportive environment in which to set daily weekly monthly, and even semester or yearly goals designed to enhance academic performance and facilitate the attainment of personal goals. One benefit I bring to my coaching work, is that as a trained mental health counselor, I will recognize when the scope of your son or daughter's needs are better suited to psychotherapy, and will make a therapeutic referral where appropriate. Some of the benefits your son or daughter may experience from coaching may include:

  • Improved study skills
  • Improved organizational skills
  • Improved strategies for time-management
  • Enhanced self-esteem
  • Improved relationships with peers
  • Enhanced strategies for dealing with physical or learning disabilities
  • Managing issues related to Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Improved academic performance
  • Improved social and communication skills
  • Improved stress management
  • Clarity regarding selection a major and career direction

Academic challenges routinely expose both our strengths and our weaknesses...individual time with a student coach enables us to develop the skills and identify the resources necessary to close the gap between where we are and where we want to be.
